Honeybees have been dying from a mysterious syndrome known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Farmers around the globe depend on honeybees to pollinate their crops. Bees are typically rented for their pollination services and transported from farm to farm.

When CCD strikes, a thriving hive may be abandoned in just a few days. This year, U.S. beekeepers have reported losing 35% of their hives -- quite a sting after last year's major loss.
Scientists are stumped over CCD's cause. Bizarre theories have surfaced, including dangerous proteins found in genetically engineered crops and disturbances from cell phone frequencies. However, most scientists now believe the stress of climate change, pesticides, viruses, parasites, over-breeding and drought might be the real cause.
Approximately a third of the world's crops depend on pollination -- making this situation more alarming than the confounding choice of honey or sugar at teatime. We may be bee-lining for disaster.
